Artist Statement:
My non-objective abstract paintings are a result of self-exploration, meditation and self-expression. They are also an experimentation of bringing forth my subconscious during the painting process, and that of the viewer after the work is completed and observed. Painting for me is an experience that is exhilarating and explorative. I improvise during the painting process without concern for the end result and become absorbed in the moment, letting all thoughts leave me as I allow myself to become one with the painting.
With each piece I find new ways to layer color and build texture in ways that vary from painting to painting, yet stay consistent with my style and approach. In my Free Form series I include paintings, drawings, screen-prints, face painting and photography. I combine the use of line, shape, texture and flat surfaces to create visual impact, unity and consistency throughout individual works and series as a whole. My painting process involves using my palette knife to build layer upon layer to create varied thick textures of rich and bold colors; in art terms referred to as an impasto approach. My preferred painting mediums are oil paints, cold wax and sometimes gesso. My color selections are never planned and applied instinctively. I give careful attention to keeping colors from getting muddy by allowing ample drying time between layers.
In my latest series, I've combined face painting and photography with the intent of using the face of young women and transforming it onto a canvas. I chose the face because as women we use it as a canvas daily when applying makeup yet don’t think of in that way; I wanted to push that idea further by using face paint in place of makeup. I applied the color using my fingers to create the texture but intentionally left areas of the flesh exposed to reveal the natural skin and person underneath.
My goal is to create a style and approach that is consistent and recognized throughout my works. The intent of my work is to have viewers stop, think about the process and progressive development while allowing for a visual experience that can not only reveal to them my subconscious but perhaps that of their own. And lastly, I want each individual, to walk away with their own interpretations.
